Hacker News, a major aggregator of technology and science news, has experienced a substantial increase in AI-related content over recent months, according to an analysis published on Coredump.
The author conducted a systematic survey of Hacker News’ daily top five stories during February 2026 and again in June of the same year. In February, AI-related stories occupied four out of five top spots on multiple days. Only three days that month—February 1, 9, and 25—did not feature an AI story within the top five, with AI stories appearing at lower positions (#6 through #9) on those days.
By June 2026, the prevalence had increased further. The analysis found that roughly 60% of the daily Hacker News lineup consisted of AI-related or AI-generated content during the first half of the month, tapering to approximately 50% toward month’s end. This represents a significant increase from the 40% figure recorded in February.
To identify AI-generated content, the author used Pangram, a detection tool designed to flag text produced by large language models. According to the analysis, these detection tools work by identifying patterns common to LLM outputs—the quasi-deterministic nature of AI writing means that requesting the same essay twice produces stylistically similar results, making the combination of individual mannerisms statistically unlikely to match human writing patterns.
The author noted that some of the flagged content received substantial engagement, citing a February 19 story titled “AI is not a coworker, it’s an exoskeleton” that accumulated over 500 upvotes and 500 comments. The author classified AI-related content into two categories: pure “AI navel-gazing” (vendor announcements and op-eds about the technology itself) and stories with broader implications but heavy AI focus (such as accounts of AI-related hacks).
This trend mirrors earlier cycles on Hacker News, such as the cryptocurrency and NFT focus around 2018. However, the author characterizes the current AI prevalence as feeling “more profound,” with stories dominated by AI topics, written by AI, or commented on by AI appearing almost daily.
