The AI company faces repricing amid market volatility and investor skepticism, down from $1.5T target just days earlier.

Anthropic's IPO valuation drops to $1.3T as investors balk at higher targets

Anthropic’s planned initial public offering is being repriced sharply downward as investor confidence wavers. Prospective investors are now discussing a valuation of $1.2 trillion to $1.3 trillion, down from the $1.4 trillion to $1.5 trillion range communicated to bankers days earlier, according to Bloomberg reporting cited by Investing.com. Three major prospective investors told the Wall Street Journal the offering would need to be priced lower, with one suggesting a valuation closer to $1 trillion.

The revision follows Thursday’s 6.4% decline in the Nasdaq 100, which erased roughly $2.3 trillion in market value in its largest single-day drop on record. The Cboe Volatility Index climbed to its highest level since April 2025. Anthropic’s valuation expectations have retreated in three steps: $2 trillion in early October, then $1.4–1.5 trillion after an investor briefing, and now $1.2–1.3 trillion following the market downturn.

Anthropicans’ financial picture reflects both significant opportunity and capital intensity. According to the company’s amended S-1 filing, Q3 2026 revenue reached $17 billion, up 12× year-over-year, with nine-month revenue of $33.24 billion and an annualized run rate of approximately $68 billion. However, the company reported a net loss of $23.3 billion in Q3, with $104 billion in losses for the first nine months. The filing reveals that roughly 90% of first-half losses ($72.4 billion of $80.5 billion) came from fair-value remeasurement of convertible notes—primarily from Amazon—whose carrying value rises as Anthropic’s valuation climbs. This accounting effect is expected to largely disappear after the IPO when notes convert to equity.

Operating performance tells a different story. Q3 showed roughly break-even results with $17.5 billion in operating expenses against $17 billion in revenue. Operating cash flow was positive $3.9 billion in the first half, and reports suggest free cash flow turned positive in Q3, with approximately 85% gross margin.

The company faces enormous compute commitments: $895.4 billion in purchase and lease agreements, substantially all for compute and infrastructure. Approximately $447.5 billion is due by end of 2030, with roughly $69.8 billion due within 12 months after September 30, 2026—about four times current quarterly revenue. These commitments explain why Anthropic needs a large capital raise. The IPO, led by Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley with 20 other banks, aims to raise at least as much as SpaceX’s record $86.2 billion debut. The stock would trade on Nasdaq under ticker ANT.

Meanwhile, an independent evaluation by Model Evaluation and Threat Research (METR) found that Anthropic is improving model capabilities on well-specified tasks around twice as fast as a year ago. METR ruled out compute growth as the driver, suggesting instead that acceleration comes from AI systems helping develop newer AI systems. However, METR noted significant caveats: the acceleration might be limited to automatically graded tasks rather than real-world problems, and could reflect understatement of prior progress.

Timing remains uncertain. Reuters reported the roadshow was expected to begin the week of November 9, with pricing the following week. However, four people familiar with investor discussions said prospective investors are questioning whether Anthropic can proceed on that timeline. Investors are pushing for more attractive valuations and awaiting Anthropic’s October revenue figure, which the company left blank in its updated S-1 filing. A delay would amplify concerns about the AI ecosystem’s health, particularly as ballot measures in multiple states have crystallized political opposition to AI infrastructure development.
