Apple releases Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips

Apple announced the new Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, featuring the M5 Max and all-new M5 Ultra chips designed for on-device AI and professional workflows. According to Apple’s press release, the systems deliver up to 4.3x faster AI performance, up to 2x faster storage, up to 1.8x faster graphics, and up to 1.3x faster CPU speed compared to prior generations.

The Mac Studio with M5 Max includes an 18-core CPU, up-to-40-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, and up to 128GB of unified memory. The M5 Ultra variant scales significantly higher, with a 36-core CPU, up to 80-core GPU, and up to 512GB of unified memory. Apple states this enables users to run large language models entirely on device.

Connectivity improvements include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thunderbolt 5 support. According to Apple, multiple Mac Studio systems can be clustered together via Thunderbolt 5 and remote direct memory access (RDMA), delivering up to 3x faster AI inference performance compared to a single system when four units are combined.

Apple highlighted specific performance gains for professional applications. Mac Studio with M5 Max achieves up to 10.7x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio versus M1 Max, and 3.9x faster than M4 Max. For text-to-image generation, the M5 Max delivers up to 7.4x improvement over M1 Max and 3.5x over M4 Max. The company cited additional benchmarks including 5.3x faster Magic Mask performance in DaVinci Resolve Studio and 3.5x faster basecalling for DNA sequencing.

Apple introduced two new software frameworks for AI development: Core AI, described as optimized for Apple silicon with support for unified memory and custom models, and expanded access to MLX, Apple’s open-source machine learning framework. These tools aim to support developers building and deploying AI models locally.

Mac Studio features unified memory bandwidth of 614GB/s for M5 Max and 1.2TB/s for M5 Ultra—50 percent higher than previous generations. The systems also include third-generation hardware-accelerated ray tracing and enhanced media engines supporting H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and AV1 decode for video work.

The new Mac Studio is available for pre-order starting August 25, 2026, with availability beginning September 22, 2026.
