Apple unveils iPhone 18 Pro with variable aperture camera and A20 Pro chip

Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, introducing significant upgrades across camera, performance, battery, and AI capabilities.

The standout feature is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, the first aperture control system in an iPhone. Six laser-cut blades smoothly transition between different apertures to automatically adjust for depth of field and lighting. According to the press release, users can manually adjust any of four aperture settings in the Camera app, and developers have API access for additional control. The camera includes a new sensor that improves image quality, delivering better low-light photography and crisper detail in group shots.

Apple introduced Apple Reference Image, a new authentication feature powered by the Main camera’s sensor. When photos are captured in Reference mode, the camera captures signed sensor data that Private Cloud Compute converts into an unalterable reference image. Users can compare this reference image to edited versions in the Photos app to determine if alterations were made. The company also noted that image metadata and upcoming SynthID standard support can help identify AI-generated or AI-edited images.

The A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process, delivers significant performance gains. It features 50 percent more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro, a faster 6-core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators, and a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster than its predecessor. The chip includes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine providing double the AI processing power of A19 Pro, totaling 32 cores for on-device AI and computational photography.

Thermal management received substantial upgrades. A next-generation vapor chamber with three times more surface area than the previous generation enables up to 40 percent higher sustained performance. iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers the largest battery life increase ever on iPhone, according to Apple.

The Dynamic Island was redesigned to show three Live Activities simultaneously while maintaining Face ID functionality. Both models run iOS 27 with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI.

Available colors include black, silver, glacier, and a new burgundy finish. Pre-orders begin Saturday, September 12, with availability starting Friday, September 18.
