Apple Unveils Watch Series 12 with New Health Sensing System and Readiness Score

Apple announced Apple Watch Series 12 on September 9, 2026, highlighting a redesigned Health Sensing System that the company says delivers the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable. According to the press release, a study with over 1,000 participants showed the watch’s heart rate accuracy exceeded that of other leading wearables. The system uses new optical and electrical heart sensors, powered by the S11 chip, to measure heart rate every five seconds throughout the day via larger, power‑efficient green LEDs. Heart rate variability (HRV) is now measured up to 24 times more often, with two variants: recovery HRV for daily stress and recovery signals, and overall HRV for broader cardiovascular insights. Overnight vitals incorporate recovery HRV measured against a user’s personal baseline, while a new daytime vitals view lets users toggle between overnight and daytime metrics. A central addition is the readiness score, a 0‑10 metric that blends recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score to suggest whether the user should Recover, Pace Yourself, be Ready, or Go For It. The score updates throughout the day and highlights the factors driving it; its algorithm was developed using data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study in collaboration with exercise scientists and physicians. The S11 chip, described as Apple’s most powerful wearable chip, also enables Audio Intelligence features that will arrive later this year to help users recall conversation moments and detect important sounds, with privacy and security built in. watchOS 27 brings Apple Intelligence‑powered Siri AI to the watch, offering personal context understanding and broader world knowledge. Battery performance sees up to 24 hours of everyday use and up to 10 hours during outdoor workouts—a 25 percent increase over the prior model. Fifteen minutes of charging now provides up to 12 hours of additional battery life, a 50 percent improvement. Step tracking has been redesigned with new machine‑learning algorithms, giving Apple Watch Series 12 the claim of most accurate step tracking of any smartwatch, and a Steps complication displays real‑time counts on the watch face. The watch is offered in finishes including dark bronze, black, light gold, space‑gray aluminum, radiant gold, natural titanium, and ceramic pearl white and night blue. Aluminum models feature Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is tougher than any smartwatch glass and 60 percent tougher than the Ion‑X glass used in previous aluminum versions. Pre‑orders began September 9, with general availability starting Friday, September 18, 2026. Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Apple Watch Product Marketing, said, “Apple Watch Series 12 is the most advanced health and fitness companion we’ve ever created,” emphasizing the device’s health insights and usability. The Health app on iPhone will receive a redesign later this year, adding a Longevity tab with a Health Age feature that shows how a user’s metrics compare to age‑based norms.
