Apple introduced Apple Watch Series 12 on September 9, 2026, featuring what the company calls the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable. The device is built around a new Health Sensing System and the S11 chip, Apple’s most powerful wearable processor.

The Health Sensing System includes new optical and electrical heart sensors that enable continuous monitoring. Apple Watch Series 12 measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day using larger, power-efficient green LEDs. According to Apple, a study comparing the device against leading wearables on over 1,000 diverse participants showed Apple Watch with the highest accuracy across devices.
Heart rate variability (HRV), which indicates stress and recovery, is now measured up to 24 times more frequently than before. The device provides two HRV variants: Recovery HRV for daily stress and recovery signals, and overall HRV for broader health insights including cardiovascular health. Higher variability generally indicates better recovery, while lower values suggest stress.
The Series 12 introduces a new readiness score that analyzes recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep to provide a 0-10 score with actionable recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. This score updates throughout the day as new data arrives. According to Apple, the scoring algorithm was developed using data from the Apple Heart and Movement Study with exercise scientists and physicians at Apple.
Battery improvements include up to 24 hours of everyday use and up to 10 hours during outdoor workouts—25 percent more than the previous model. Charging has also improved: 15 minutes now provides up to 12 hours of additional battery life, a 50 percent increase.
The S11 chip also enables redesigned step tracking with new machine learning algorithms, offering what Apple claims is the most accurate step tracking of any smartwatch. A new Steps complication allows real-time step tracking from the watch face.
WatchOS 27 brings Apple Intelligence to Siri on the watch, and new Audio Intelligence features arriving later will help users remember conversation moments and stay alert to important sounds, built with privacy protections. A redesigned Health app for iPhone, arriving later in 2026, will include a Longevity tab with a Health Age feature.
Apple Watch Series 12 comes in aluminum, titanium, and ceramic finishes. Aluminum models feature Ceramic Shield 2, described as 60 percent tougher than previous Ion-X material. Pre-orders began September 9, with availability starting September 18, 2026.
