Bill Gates outlined a two-phase vision for artificial intelligence’s impact on society during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on September 27, warning that the world has entered a rough adjustment period before AI’s major benefits materialize.

According to Gates, the early phase of the AI era—which he estimates will last approximately 20 years—will bring significant challenges even as the technology reshapes the job market. “Yet it will be changing the job market and potentially empowering criminals if we don’t have the right safeguards, so you have a period that’s probably 20 years long where you have this adjustment,” Gates said, according to Business Insider.
Gates believes AI ultimately has the power to lower healthcare costs and reduce living expenses, but warned these benefits remain years away. For investors, this timeline is significant because companies currently profiting from AI—including Nvidia and Microsoft—are primarily selling tools that other firms use to build their own AI systems. The larger economic gains Gates described could take a full generation to materialize.
Beyond economic concerns, Gates emphasized security risks posed by AI technology in the wrong hands. He warned that AI is “certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths” if accessed by individuals with malicious intent, according to Axios. “Even though it’s pretty hard to get to 100%, there’s never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools,” Gates told NBC host Kristen Welker.
These warnings underscore why Gates has become an advocate for stronger AI regulations. In a Gates Notes post titled “A turbulent AI era and critical choices to make,” he called on law enforcement and lawmakers to establish safety guardrails immediately. He emphasized that tighter rules on data use and model safety could significantly influence which AI companies succeed over the next decade.
Gates’ background gives his perspective considerable weight in these discussions. The Microsoft co-founder, who helped establish the industry now driving AI technology, co-founded Microsoft with Paul Allen in 1975. Microsoft generates revenue through Windows and Office software, its Xbox gaming business, and Azure cloud computing services. Azure powers many widely-used AI tools, and Microsoft is the largest corporate investor in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
