Starting with version 0.157.0, OpenAI’s Codex CLI automatically launches a persistent background daemon without explicit user consent, according to a GitHub issue filed by a developer.

When users open an interactive Codex session, the CLI now starts a detached process called codex app-server --managed-daemon that continues running even after closing the Codex window, reparenting to the system’s root process until manually stopped or the system reboots.
The daemon copies approximately 374 MB of files—including codex, codex-code-mode-host, and bundled tools like bwrap, zsh, and rg—into a local directory (~/.codex/packages/app-server-daemon/releases/<version>/). This copy duplicates what was already installed via npm, but then runs independently from the installed binary.
Once running, a separate updater process checks for new versions 5 minutes after startup and then hourly. When updates are found, the daemon downloads and installs them automatically, potentially restarting the backend and interrupting active sessions. According to the issue, this auto-update behavior cannot be disabled.
The issue reporter notes that the daemon inherits environment variables from whichever session started it first. If a user launches Codex through a wrapper that sets proxy variables, the daemon retains those settings regardless of proxy configuration in subsequent sessions, potentially routing all connections through an incorrect proxy.
Multiple users confirmed the problem makes the CLI “unusable” on their systems. One workaround involves manually disabling the feature via configuration and stopping both the daemon and its updater process separately.
The issue author argues that for a command-line tool, the default expectation is that the backend lives and dies with the session and runs the user’s installed binary. They suggest that persistent, self-updating daemons make sense for desktop applications or when explicitly requested, but not for the CLI by default.
Key facts
- Codex CLI 0.157.0 automatically starts a persistent background daemon without user consent
- The daemon copies 374 MB of files into ~/.codex/packages and runs independently from the installed binary
- An automatic updater checks for new versions hourly and restarts the daemon, potentially killing active sessions
- The daemon inherits environment variables from the first session that started it, affecting all subsequent sessions
- Multiple users reported the feature makes the CLI unusable; disabling it requires manual configuration and process termination
