The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3, Episode 7, titled “Hourglass,” aired September 6, 2026, and delivered a major turning point in the season’s conflict. The episode reveals crucial backstory about Dillard while setting up a new threat for the season finale.

According to the Mac Observer recap, the episode resolves tensions from the previous episode by returning to the main timeline. Negan had killed Fabian, a member of the community, because Fabian planned to kill Maggie. Though the decision was difficult to defend, Maggie understands Negan acted out of what he believed was necessity to protect her. Negan had already taken Fabian’s gun before the killing.

The episode’s central revelation concerns Dillard’s actions. Negan had previously killed two of Dillard’s walker companions—one accidentally and one intentionally—because he viewed them as dangers ahead of an anticipated attack by Renata’s group. Rather than accept this explanation, Dillard cut his own face and falsely claimed Negan attacked him, exploiting Renata’s existing distrust of Negan.

When community leader Renata begins reconsidering her stance toward Negan, with Luis convincing her to take Negan into custody rather than execute him, Dillard refuses to accept the decision. He shoots Renata in the chest, killing her. Luis witnesses his sister’s murder and is knocked unconscious, leaving Dillard free to seize control of the community, known as the Dozen.

Following Renata’s death, Dillard orders an attack on Maggie and Negan’s position at a bar. The two manage to escape with Hershel’s help during the fighting. Dillard then consolidates power by raiding the armory, taking control of the community’s food supplies, holding survivors inside the hospital, and putting on his old NYPD uniform as a symbol of his new authority.

The episode represents a significant shift in the season’s narrative. Previous seasons focused on Maggie and Negan’s violent history and Maggie’s struggle to coexist with Glenn’s killer. Season 3 has gradually built trust between them, and this episode deepens that dynamic by making Maggie the one defending Negan against those who want him dead.

The season 3 finale, Episode 8 titled “Tenebrae,” arrives September 13, 2026. It must address Renata’s death, Luis’ reaction to his sister’s murder, and Dillard’s emergence as the community’s new threat—with Maggie, Negan, and Hershel now positioned outside the community while Dillard controls its weapons and supplies.
