A font designer has released a digital typeface reconstructed from photographs of original Commodore 64 keyboard keycaps, making the nostalgic aesthetic available for modern use.

According to the project documentation, the font includes uppercase letters, numbers, punctuation, arrows, and selected accented letters—including Hungarian characters. It also features function-key labels (f1–f12) and classic C64 key legends, plus all 63 PETSCII graphic symbols arranged by their original key positions.

The design approach prioritizes authenticity to the printed keycaps rather than the computer’s screen bitmap font. The creator inferred frame thickness, curves, and proportions from keyboard photographs, reconstructing the outlines rather than creating exact photo traces. Notably, lowercase input displays as uppercase, recreating the original key legends.

The font is available in multiple formats: TTF and OTF for installation on computer systems, plus webfont versions for digital use. Users can download the complete package, which includes a preview.html file for testing. The preview tool allows users to click special-key or PETSCII buttons to insert symbols into a type tester, then copy the text into their applications after selecting the C64 Keyboard font.

According to the documentation, the PETSCII graphics are smooth geometric reconstructions rather than direct scans. The special symbols can be accessed using keyboard combinations—left legends correspond to Commodore + key, while right legends correspond to Shift + key in uppercase/graphics mode. The pi symbol on the up-arrow key also works with the Commodore key.

The project is presented as an independent, unofficial reconstruction. The identities and key assignments are drawn from the Ultimate Commodore 64 Reference, and the creator notes that editable outlines and build tools are available for those interested in customizing or building upon the font. Original keyboard photographs are not included in the distribution.

The current version is 1.107, with users advised to replace earlier versions and restart applications to ensure proper display of the updated font.
