E Ink Launches Kaleido 4 Color ePaper Platform With Major Performance Upgrades

E Ink announced the release of E Ink Kaleido 4, the latest generation of its color ePaper platform designed to support expanding applications beyond eBooks into classroom and workplace environments.

E Ink Launches Kaleido 4 Color ePaper Platform With Major Performance Upgrades

According to E Ink, Kaleido 4 delivers significant improvements across multiple performance metrics. Compared to the previous generation, the platform doubles its color gamut volume to more than 40,000 colors, increases white reflectance by 15%, and improves contrast by 50%. The new algorithms enable video playback at up to 18 frames per second, allowing color ePaper to display text, images, charts, presentations and video content with greater clarity while reducing screen graininess.

The M10C II smart ePaper notebook from Hanvon Technology, described as a leader in China’s eReader market, marks the world’s first end-product to feature E Ink Kaleido 4. The device incorporates a new oxide TFT backplane that supports higher driving voltages and faster screen refresh. Combined with Hanvon’s proprietary “Enhanced Pressure Floating” technology and T2000 timing controller, the M10C II achieves 27% faster page turning and scrolling compared to previous versions. A redesigned front-light system also delivers clearer, more natural color reproduction.

Beyond the display upgrade, the M10C II integrates Hanvon’s OCR, voice and AI-powered office applications, along with cloud library synchronization and ripple-reduction technology. For handwriting, the device features a wireless, battery-free digital pen with 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity. A micro-etched tempered-glass surface reduces glare and parallax while providing paper-like writing resistance.

According to Johnson Lee, Chairman and CEO of E Ink, the new platform addresses the need for color ePaper to deliver more than simply color. “We are pleased to work with Hanvon Technology to launch the world’s first product featuring E Ink Kaleido 4, jointly expanding the applications of next-generation color ePaper across professional reading, learning and mobile office scenarios,” Lee said. Hanvon’s Vice President Wang Jie stated that the M10C II aims to take color ePaper beyond reading devices into productivity scenarios such as R&D tools, professional document review, meeting records and mobile office applications.
