Europe's BEV sales surge 50% as electric vehicles hit 26% market share

Battery electric vehicles registered a record 366,000 units in June across Europe, driven by cheaper models, high gas prices, and Chinese competition.

Europe's BEV sales surge 50% as electric vehicles hit 26% market share

Europe’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) market reached a milestone in June, with 366,000 fully electric cars registered—a 50% year-over-year increase and the fastest growth rate so far this year, according to CleanTechnica’s analysis of European EV sales data.

BEVs now represent 26% of the overall European market, with year-to-date BEV share standing at 23%, already exceeding 2025’s full-year result of 20%. When combined with plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), plugin vehicles accounted for 37% of June sales, up 41% year-over-year, though PHEV growth lagged at 23%.

The surge reflects several converging factors: the arrival of cheaper electric models, elevated gas prices, and increased competition from Chinese manufacturers. Overall, 72% of cars sold in Europe in June featured some form of electrification, with traditional petrol vehicles declining to 21% market share and diesel shrinking to just 6%.

BEVs now dominate plugin vehicle sales, claiming 71% of all plugin registrations in June and averaging 69% year-to-date—their highest share since 2012. This represents a shift away from PHEVs, mirroring trends already visible in China.

The market composition has shifted noticeably. Previously, only Tesla models appeared among Europe’s top-selling vehicles. Now, Chinese models like the Leapmotor T03 and BYD Atto 2 are competing for top positions. In June, Tesla’s Model Y led all European vehicle sales with 34,480 registrations, followed by its Model 3 with 18,028 units. The BYD Atto 2, primarily driven by its new PHEV version, recorded 13,100 registrations.

City cars show the strongest EV penetration, with models like the Leapmotor T03 and Dacia Spring appearing on overall sales podiums alongside traditional combustion vehicles. However, Europe’s most important market segments—the B and C segments (compact and midsize vehicles)—remain heavily weighted toward traditional powertrains, presenting the biggest challenge for continued EV growth.

The overall European car market grew 13% year-over-year in June to 1.4 million units, with hybrid vehicles (non-plug-in) also gaining traction at 35% market share. Analysts suggest that if current trends continue, reaching near-total electrification by the mid-2030s is achievable, though broader adoption in mid-market segments remains essential.
