Timothy Gowers, a Fields medallist and mathematician at Cambridge, published a blog post explaining why he declined to sign a letter authored by 25 Fields medallists addressing concerns about artificial intelligence in mathematics.

The unsigned letter, according to Gowers, emphasizes that “solving problems is only a tool and proxy for achieving the primary goal of conceptual understanding and insight,” and warns that rapid production of true/false statements via AI “could destroy fertile ground instead of breathing life into new ideas.”
Gowers agrees with much of the letter’s content and acknowledges the mathematical community faces a crisis. However, he disputes what he characterizes as the letter’s core argument: that conceptual understanding should be prioritized over problem-solving.
Instead, Gowers proposes that mathematicians exist along a spectrum. Some are primarily motivated by problem-solving and view conceptual understanding as a means to that end, while others prioritize conceptual understanding and see problem-solving as instrumental. “I don’t want to suggest to a large fraction of mathematicians, including myself, that their mathematical temperament is somehow ‘wrong’,” he writes.
Gowers illustrates this philosophy through a childhood anecdote about attempting to prove Fermat’s Last Theorem around age 11. Though unsuccessful, he discovered difference sequences empirically by working through the problem. This hands-on exploration, he argues, deepened his later understanding of polynomials—demonstrating that value emerges from problem-solving attempts regardless of whether they yield solutions.
Gowers clarifies potential conflicts of interest, noting he has received early access to OpenAI models and free Pro access but has never been paid by the company. He also directs attention to related perspectives from mathematicians Jacob Tsimerman and Daniel Litt, both of whom declined to sign the letter.
Gowers emphasizes he does not intend to align himself with an “opposing camp” and expresses concern about potential division within mathematics. He argues the real question is whether advancing collective mathematical understanding or solving as many problems as possible should be the primary goal—or whether both aims hold different but complementary value.
