Last September, the Servo project announced that longtime maintainer Josh Bowman‑Matthews would work part‑time on improving the contributor experience, with his salary covered by monthly donations collected through OpenCollective and GitHub. In a retrospective post, Bowman‑Matthews thanked the community for the financial support that let him devote significant time to the project. He said he nominated eight new maintainers during the funded period and reviewed 1,150 pull requests. Bowman‑Matthews also filed 114 issues aimed at newer contributors, noting that 92 % of those issues have been resolved. In addition, he wrote new documentation covering borrow hazards, experimental features, the project’s AI policy, guidance on finding tasks to work on, and advice for fixing both stable and intermittent test failures. Beyond those activities, he spent time diagnosing unexpected failures in others’ pull requests and fixed numerous intermittent test failures that had been making it harder for contributors to merge their changes. Among the work that stood out to him, Bowman‑Matthews highlighted his role in supporting a large‑scale rewrite of Servo’s JavaScript engine integration. This effort was undertaken to address intermittent panics linked to garbage collection; he reviewed many pull requests and filed additional issues that allowed the work to be distributed across other contributors. He also described being tagged in to help understand test failures, which led to the discovery of a broken window.open implementation and subsequently helped stabilize a number of flaky tests. Another notable contribution was his assistance with a grant proposal submitted by another contributor; that proposal was approved, enabling further work on Servo. Bowman‑Matthews said the arrangement has given him a healthy balance between family time and project contributions, and he continues to look for ways to make Servo more welcoming for newcomers. He closed his reflection by thanking every individual donor, emphasizing that each monthly contribution makes a difference, and expressed optimism about what the coming year could bring.
