Kagi Search announced on November 5th, 2026 that it is removing its account requirement barrier, allowing anyone to visit kagi.com and search the web without registration. Users can now perform up to 50 free searches, with an additional 100 searches available after creating an account.

According to Kagi, the change addresses feedback from users who found it difficult to recommend the search engine when friends and family couldn’t try it without committing to account creation. “We’ve heard that it can be hard to recommend a search engine when your friends can’t try it without creating an account. That’s changed,” the company stated in its changelog.

Kagi operates on a subscription model without advertising. The company has historically relied on word-of-mouth marketing and engagement in social media and online communities rather than traditional advertising channels.

Along with the trial access expansion, Kagi introduced an updated landing page designed specifically for new users to help them understand the service’s features.

The announcement also included Kagi’s commentary on industry developments, specifically responding to Google’s plan to disable AI tools by default for school accounts starting in early 2027. Kagi criticized the bundling of this restriction with Google Search itself, stating: “Education shouldn’t be taken hostage by an advertising company.” The company called on schools to consider alternatives and positioned itself as one option available to educational institutions.

The update also included a significant redesign of Kagi’s Android application, featuring a rebuilt home screen, improved voice search functionality, and new Quick Settings integration. The app now displays remaining free searches for trial users, has native search bars and tabs that collapse while scrolling, and includes image search capabilities.

Additionally, Kagi released updates across its suite of tools, including its Assistant app with improved shared threads and voice input, a News product that was featured on Google Play, and a Translate service with enhanced language support and proofreading features. The changelog also documented numerous bug fixes and feature improvements across all platforms, addressing issues ranging from search result accuracy to interface clarity.
