Libreboot, free and open-source boot firmware that replaces proprietary BIOS/UEFI on Intel, AMD, and ARM64 hardware, released version 26.10 on October 15, 2026, introducing major design changes including full UEFI support and Chromebook compatibility.

Libreboot 26.10 adds UEFI support and brings 233 Chromebooks to the platform

According to the release announcement by Leah Rowe, the most significant addition is EDK2 integration as the default payload across nearly all supported boards. EDK2 is Intel’s reference implementation of the UEFI specification, provided as a fork by MrChromebox that enables it to work as a generic coreboot payload. This allows Libreboot to boot any UEFI-compliant operating system, including Microsoft Windows, which was previously incompatible.

The release imports all 233 currently supported Chromebooks from the MrChromebox coreboot distribution, including Intel and AMD models up to the most recent hardware. These boards are source-only in this release, meaning users must build from source rather than use pre-compiled binaries. According to the announcement, Libreboot treats MrChromebox as upstream for Intel/AMD Chromebooks and will maintain synchronization with it. The Chromebook support was achieved through a new build system feature enabling an arbitrary number of upstreams per project.

For compatibility, EFI builds of GRUB and SeaBIOS are provided in flash and accessible via the EDK2 setup menu, allowing existing Linux and BSD installations to continue working. The older bare-metal GRUB and SeaBIOS coreboot payloads have been replaced by these EFI versions.

The release also includes updates to AMD Fam15h mainboards, which now use a coreboot fork from 15h.org incorporating AMD AGESA source code instead of custom initialization code. According to the announcement, this provides more reliable memory and CPU initialization, supports more RAM, and fixes numerous bugs including IOMMU and TPM functionality.

A significant non-technical addition is a strongly anti-AI policy documented in a new AGENTS.md file, which the project highlights as the most important change in the release. The announcement emphasizes that users carefully read the changelog twice due to the major design changes that may affect existing setups.
