LineageOS has released version 24.0, completing its rebase onto Android 17’s codebase ahead of schedule. According to the official changelog, the project credits Google’s heavy refactoring work in recent Android versions for enabling faster adaptation this year.

The release comes as LineageOS approaches its 10-year anniversary on December 24, 2026. The project announced the milestone in its changelog, noting that LineageOS 24.0 represents continued progress for the community-built custom Android distribution that has kept older devices functional beyond their official support lifecycles.
Security updates form a major component of this release. LineageOS has merged security patches from August 2025 through October 2026 across versions 18.1 through 24.0. The project continues distributing full security bulletins for Android 14 (LineageOS 21) and newer versions where Google actively provides them. Additionally, legacy branches 15.1, 16.0, and 17.1 have received security patches through November 2025, though some December 2025 patches proved too difficult to backport.
The application suite underwent significant updates. Canvas, a new image editor handling cropping, white balance, and filters, joins existing gallery and camera applications. The Updater app now defaults to streaming updates, reducing installation time on A/B devices and automatically updating recovery partitions on non-A/B devices. Material Design 3 Expressive implementation rolled out across multiple apps including SetupWizard, Catapult, and Updater. Twelve (Music) improved load times for large libraries and Jellyfin support. Jelly browser added PWA-like app support, and WebView updated to version 155.0.8059.30.
LineageOS introduced browser-based WebUSB flash tools at flash.lineageos.org, supporting ADB, Fastboot, Amlogic Burn protocol, and Samsung Odin protocol. These tools allow installation directly from a browser without requiring separate desktop software, though the project emphasized that existing installation guides remain the default supported method.
The project also completed an accessibility audit performed by the a11y project, providing free training to over 40 contributors. Recovery navigation and UI underwent reworking as a result.
LineageOS 24.0 will launch supporting multiple devices initially, with additional devices coming as they meet project requirements. The organization formally announced it will only accept LineageOS 22.2 submissions for devices using Linux Kernel versions 4.4 and 4.9, citing difficulty in maintaining older kernel versions.
