The security chip inside the original PlayStation 2 has been successfully reverse-engineered and dumped by Canadian retro hardware enthusiast DiscoStarslayer. The CXP102064 MechaCon chip, which shipped in the PS2 Fat console from 1999, was cracked open after four years of effort.

The MechaCon earned its name from its primary function of controlling the PS2’s optical and flash drive mechanics. According to the PSDev Wiki, the chip also supported Sony’s game optical disc security, handling “Magic Gate [memory card] and KELF file [executable] decryption among other things.”

DiscoStarslayer employed multiple reverse engineering techniques to unlock the chip’s secrets. The process involved chemically decapping the CXP102064 to expose its silicon die, then using microscopes and optical analysis to study the chip’s circuitry. A breakthrough came when the researcher discovered a software exploit that allowed the chip’s data to be extracted through software rather than purely through physical analysis.

The breakthrough has implications across multiple domains. The game and hardware preservation communities stand to benefit from improved emulation capabilities and enhanced homebrew development possibilities. The achievement also opens possibilities for replacing aging optical drives in PS2 consoles, potentially extending the hardware’s functional lifespan.

Beyond PS2 Fat consoles, the MechaCon chip saw use in arcade machines from the same era, according to social media comments cited in the report. These included Namco System 246 and System 256 machines, as well as the Konami Python 1, which used modified PS2 hardware and relied on MechaCon firmware for authentication and encrypted game data execution.
