Shopify has acquired Tailwind, the open-source CSS framework that has become widely adopted across the tech industry. According to the announcement, Tailwind CSS is installed over 110 million times per week and is used by major companies including ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, Reddit, and Shopify itself.

The creator of Tailwind started working on the framework nine years ago with the goal of making it easier to build beautiful interfaces. Over that time, it evolved from a personal project into a fundamental tool trusted by many of the world’s largest companies.
According to the announcement, Shopify acquired Tailwind to provide “a stable long-term home” where it will be actively maintained for the millions of people who depend on it. The founder noted that while Tailwind’s creators built a website template business around the framework, the deeper motivation was to see it developed in service of a real product—a complex application solving important problems where the team could face the same challenges as users.
Shopify provides what the founder describes as “an incredible surface area” for this work. The company’s merchants need to design and host beautiful custom storefronts, manage sales and inventory, and provide delightful shopping experiences. Shopify is also exploring agentic commerce, representing the frontier of where user interfaces need to go next.
Significantly, Tailwind CSS was one of the very first companies operating at scale to recognize Tailwind’s potential and adopt it—not only for internal use but for their customers as well. According to the announcement, Tailwind is “a load-bearing very important part of the stack at Shopify.”
The acquisition will not change how Tailwind CSS operates. The framework will remain MIT-licensed, and the team will continue to lead and maintain open-source projects for the community with Shopify’s support. However, on the commercial side, the company is closing sign-ups for new customers of products like Tailwind Plus and ui.sh to focus on Tailwind CSS development at Shopify.
