Sony has not officially announced the PlayStation 6, but the company’s leadership has indicated a next-generation console is under consideration. According to Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki, speaking with Wall Street Journal via Digital Foundry, the company has not yet determined the timing or pricing for the expected console.
“We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console or at what prices. So we would like to really observe and follow the situation,” Totoki said.
While Sony has remained officially quiet, rumors about the PS6 have circulated widely. Some hardware insiders have claimed the console could release as soon as 2027, though this remains unconfirmed. A speculated accompanying handheld console, reportedly codenamed Project Canis, has been the subject of leaked specifications by a hardware insider known as KeplerL2. According to these unconfirmed claims, the handheld could feature six AMD CPU cores, 16 RDNA 5 compute units, and 24GB LPDDR5X memory, with a power draw between 15-25W. One renowned hardware insider has suggested the handheld device could cost more than $600.
Separately, Sony has confirmed it will discontinue producing physical discs for PlayStation games releasing from January 2028 onwards, though it will continue producing discs for titles released before that date. This decision prompted a planned blackout protest in August by gamers opposed to the shift. According to Mat Piscatella, senior director at analytics firm Circana, the blackout showed “no significant change at all in player count or engagement” based on the firm’s tracking data for the week ending September 5.
