Sphinx: A Git hook that quizzes developers on AI-generated code before deployment

Free, open-source tool pauses commits to ask developers questions about what their AI agent's code actually does, ensuring understanding before shipping.

Sphinx: A Git hook that quizzes developers on AI-generated code before deployment

Sphinx is a Git hook designed for agent-assisted development workflows. According to the project, it works by intercepting code commits and asking developers comprehension questions about changes their AI coding assistants have made before allowing the code to ship.

The tool operates in three steps: First, a developer (or their coding agent) attempts to push code, and Git pauses on protected branches. Second, Sphinx generates a question about the diff that a reviewer who never saw the original chat interaction must answer. Third, the developer answers the question—if incorrect, they learn why and can try a new scenario; if correct, the push continues.

Sphinx is available as a free, open-source project installable via npm. According to the documentation, it’s built to run on minimal tokens and can integrate with existing coding agents, OpenRouter, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The tool supports integration with popular AI coding assistants including Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode, and Pi, as well as plain Git workflows.

The project emphasizes security: developer answers never reach the coding agent, and environment files and API keys are never opened during the process. For developers in a hurry, Sphinx offers a sphinx yolo command that lets pushes through while logging every skip for later review.

Installation requires Node 22.19 or higher and works on macOS, Linux, or WSL. The setup process involves running npm install -g sphinx-understand followed by sphinx install, which connects Git and coding agents and prompts users to select which model should review code. After setup, developers push code as usual.

The tool is based on the principle that, as quoted on the project page, “You can outsource your thinking, but not your understanding.” By requiring developers to articulate their understanding of AI-generated code before deployment, Sphinx aims to maintain developer comprehension and accountability in AI-assisted workflows.
