Supabase announced it is acquiring Turso, a SQLite-focused database platform, to address the infrastructure demands created by AI agents building software at scale.

According to Supabase, AI agents are currently spinning up millions of databases to power prototypes, explorations, dashboards, and apps. Supabase reports it is already launching over one million databases per week. The company states that as agents build more software, database demand will likely outpace current infrastructure capacity.
Turso has developed architecture specifically designed for this pattern. According to the announcement, Turso rebuilt SQLite in Rust and created a cloud platform where a single server can manage millions of databases, loading them on demand and suspending them when unused. This approach allows customers like Superhuman, Sauna.ai, CTO.new, and Mastra to provision databases for each agent on demand, whether on Turso Cloud or in their own cloud infrastructure.
The acquisition allows the two companies to combine their approaches. Supabase will continue building around Postgres for larger, production-scale workloads, while Turso will continue its work on SQLite for smaller, on-demand use cases. According to the announcement, SQLite is well-suited to small, on-demand workloads, while Postgres is better suited as applications scale.
The goal is to provide developers with a consistent experience from prototyping through production. Supabase states that agents should be able to create a database as easily as creating a file, with minimal cost concerns, without requiring dedicated machine provisioning for smaller workloads.
For existing users of both platforms, nothing changes immediately. Turso will continue operating with what Supabase describes as “a clear path into the broader Supabase ecosystem as workloads grow.”
Both companies share commitments to open source software and developer experience. Glauber Costa and Pekka Enberg, leaders from Turso, are joining Supabase. Costa will lead the company’s agentic infrastructure effort.
