Takeshi’s Castle, a Japanese game show that originally aired between 1986 and 1990 on Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS), has returned to audiences through a reboot on Amazon Prime Video beginning April 21, 2023.

The original series, titled in Japanese as Fūun! Takeshi-jō, featured Japanese comedian Takeshi Kitano (also known as Beat Takeshi) playing a count who designed elaborate physical challenges for contestants to overcome in order to reach him in his castle. According to the source material, the show became a cult television hit around the world and was highly influential in global popular culture, inspiring a genre of game shows involving physical challenges and painful entertainment.
The original show ran between 86 and 142 contestants per episode who faced elimination-style physical challenges overseen by General Tani (Hayato Tani). Survivors of the challenges attempted a final assault on Takeshi’s castle with the goal of claiming it for Tani. The series was filmed on a fixed campus at TBS-owned Midoriyama (Green Mountain) Studios in Yokohama, Kanagawa, which featured extensive landscaping including man-made lakes and elaborate permanent obstacles.
The show’s challenges were diverse and inventive, ranging from climbing soapy slopes in Border Wall to navigating mazes in Devil’s Domain, crossing lakes via shifting stones in Dragon God’s Pond, and swinging across muddy pits in Heaven and Hell. Many challenges involved falling into water or mud upon failure.
The original series’ final regular episode aired on April 14, 1989, followed by four one-off specials until October 19, 1990. A special revival was broadcast on April 2, 2005, for TBS’s 50th anniversary celebrations. For the 2023 reboot on Amazon Prime Video, German-Japanese actor Subaru Kimura joined returning co-leader Tani to guide contestants. While an injury list was published in 2004, the publisher later admitted to fabricating it. According to the source, while minor injuries were reported, few to no major injuries occurred on the show.
