Tim Curry, the actor and stage performer best known for playing Dr Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show, has died aged 80 at his home in Los Angeles, according to his manager who confirmed the news to Variety. No cause of death has been reported.
Curry’s most iconic roles required significant physical transformation that made him virtually unrecognizable. As Frank-N-Furter in the 1973 stage production and 1975 film adaptation of The Rocky Horror Show, he performed in garish makeup, stockings and suspenders. In Ridley Scott’s 1985 fantasy Legend, he played the Lord of Darkness with giant horns and scarlet skin. In 1990, he was transformed with full-face clown makeup to portray Pennywise in the TV miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s It.
Born in 1946, Curry earned a drama and English degree from the University of Birmingham in 1968 and began his stage career in the 1968 West End production of Hair, where he met Richard O’Brien, who later cast him in The Rocky Horror Show. His theatrical roles included Tristan Tzara in Tom Stoppard’s Travesties and Mozart in the 1980 Broadway transfer of Amadeus. Later, he played King Arthur in the Broadway run of the Monty Python musical Spamalot.
Beyond his transformative roles, Curry maintained a prolific career across film, television, and voice acting. Film roles included appearances in The Shout, The Ploughman’s Lunch, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Muppet Treasure Island, and Scary Movie 2. He provided voiceovers for animated films including Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties and voiced characters in animated series such as Duckman, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Mask, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. On television, he appeared in Psych, Poirot, Criminal Minds, and played William Shakespeare in a 1978 six-part biography and Bill Sikes in a 1982 US adaptation of Oliver Twist.
In 2012, Curry suffered a stroke while receiving a massage and underwent brain surgery, which left him with mobility issues and affected his short-term memory. Despite these challenges, he continued working and released his memoir, Vagabond, in 2025. In an interview with the Guardian in 2025, he reflected on his career: “I’ve had the opportunities, and I’m still showing up. You know? I think that’s what you have to do. You have to keep showing up.”
Colleagues paid tribute following his death. Luke Evans, who recently played Dr Frank-N-Furter in a Broadway production of The Rocky Horror Show, called Curry “a force, a bright fierce flame” and “an inspiration” on Instagram. Carol Burnett, who starred with him in Annie, wrote online that “nobody could play lovable villains better than he could.”
