Jordan Henderson completed his full debut for Chelsea against Brentford, impressing manager Xabi Alonso with his endurance despite lacking match sharpness. The 35-year-old former Liverpool captain played the entire 90 minutes, which Alonso described as an important milestone in his integration into the club.

According to Alonso, Henderson prioritized his Chelsea integration over additional rest during the international break. Rather than taking extended leave, the midfielder used the time to familiarize himself with Chelsea’s tactical system and build relationships with his new teammates.
Alonso emphasized Henderson’s commitment to making an immediate contribution to the squad. “He didn’t want many days off,” the manager said. “For him it was important to have the feeling of being back on the pitch after missing pre-season, missing the first games, and to feel how his arm was feeling and to have that confidence.”
The Chelsea manager highlighted Henderson’s personality and dedication as valuable qualities within the group. Alonso noted that character plays a significant role in shaping his squad, and Henderson’s extensive experience in league football would benefit the team.
Regarding Henderson’s performance against Brentford, Alonso stated: “It was important to unlock those first minutes on the pitch. That he was playing that tempo, that intensity for 90 minutes, it was good, and I think that now it will be getting better.”
Alonso also expressed confidence in Henderson’s development at the club. He believes the midfielder’s understanding of the team’s requirements will improve with time and that Henderson has already begun connecting well with his teammates. “We need the right players in terms of quality, in terms of personality, and Hendo has great personality, great experience in the league,” Alonso said. “Now we have had more time with him, he can connect very well with the players.”
