Microsoft has begun rolling out a la carte Cloud Playtime purchases to Xbox Insiders, allowing players to pay hourly fees to stream games they own on supported devices. According to the company, this move follows September’s decision to severely limit game-streaming access for Game Pass subscribers.

The introductory pricing structure offers three tiers: 10 hours for $4 (approximately $0.40 per hour), 25 hours for $8 (approximately $0.32 per hour), and 50 hours for $12 (approximately $0.24 per hour). Microsoft states that purchased playtime “remains available until it’s used,” meaning there is no expiration date on unused hours.
The metered payment model represents a departure from the typical all-you-can-play experience that has become standard in home gaming. However, it mirrors the arcade gaming model of past decades, where players would pay per session. As noted in the announcement, these streaming costs are in addition to the purchase price of the games themselves. Unlike Xbox Game Pass, which includes limited monthly streaming access to hundreds of games as part of the subscription cost, Cloud Playtime packs “require cloud playable game purchase or, for select games, free-to-play access,” according to Microsoft.
This approach differs significantly from Google’s Stadia streaming service, which offered unlimited streaming playtime across devices for purchased games. However, Stadia purchases could not be downloaded for local play on PCs or consoles, making the overall value proposition different. Google’s shutdown of Stadia in 2022 rendered those purchases unplayable, though the company offered full refunds for all Stadia purchases.
Microsoft’s Cloud Playtime model adds a recurring cost layer to game ownership, requiring players to pay both for the initial game purchase and then for each hour of streaming use. While 24 cents per hour may appear modest on its surface, the combined cost of game purchase plus streaming fees could accumulate for players who regularly stream titles they own.
