Zig v0.17.0 marks a substantial release cycle for the general-purpose programming language, according to the official release notes. The update represents 5 months of development work spanning 206 different contributors and 925 commits.

A major focus of this release was reworking Zig’s Build System, which now includes the introduction of the Build Server Protocol. The ELF Linker received significant enhancements, with the development team noting that Incremental Compilation is now expected to work for all users on x86_64-linux.
The release expands platform support considerably. New targets added include loongarch32-linux-gnu and loongarch64-linux architectures, along with enhanced support for sparc64-linux—an improvement attributed to Zig’s new ELF linker offering better support than LLD. Additional platforms gaining support include xtensa-linux (via the C backend or experimental LLVM backend), aarch64-windows binaries, and various other architectures across the aarch64, arm, mips, and powerpc families.
Testing infrastructure improvements were also implemented. According to the release notes, aarch64-openbsd is now tested natively in Zig’s CI, while aarch64-freebsd and aarch64-netbsd CI jobs now run on pull requests in addition to master pushes.
Language and standard library changes include modifications to @bitCast, introduction of @fromBackingInt and @SpirvType, addition of @divCeil and @hasDecl, support for comptime Length Slices, and removal of void{} syntax. The debug.SafetyLock gained support for shared locking, and std.zon.parse was reworked.
Zig development is funded by the Zig Software Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that solicits recurring donations to accelerate progress toward the 1.0 roadmap.
The release maintains a tiered support system for various targets, with Tier 1 representing the highest support level. The development team notes that achieving zero disabled tests for Tier 1 targets will become a requirement for post-1.0.0 Zig releases.
